"Every Chinese family we knew bought rice in 50- or 100-pound bags. The biggest mystery was Minute Rice, touted in commercials to cook in sixty seconds. No one saw the point of that; what was the hurry?."

America’s love affair with Asian food was the focus of a two-day conference, “Eating Chinese: Global and Local Perspectives on Food and Memory.” The conference was accompanied by a show of watercolor illustrations from Ellen Blonder’s book of recipes and reminiscences, Every Grain of Rice. The event was jointly sponsored by the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America and the John Nicholas Brown Center Public Humanities Program, both of Brown University; and the Culinary Arts Museum.
